Start with the observed event
A stalled pump and a pump that loses air continuously are not the same observation. Record whether motion stops, whether the exhaust continues and whether the behavior changes under load. These observations locate the investigation; they do not identify a failed component by themselves.
Supply, shifting and leakage are different branches
The air distribution system routes compressed air between chambers. In a pilot-operated arrangement, the pilot provides a changeover signal while the main distribution valve handles the working-air path. The exact mechanism and component names depend on the pump design.
Wilden’s Pro-Flo SHIFT troubleshooting guidance considers inlet filtration, leakage associated with seals or bores, and mechanical obstructions. It also references pilot-spool and main-shaft areas. That is a broader investigation than replacing a main valve whenever the pump runs slowly.

Create an evidence-led service note
Separate measured conditions from suspected causes. “Stops after several strokes with continuous exhaust” is an observation; “pilot valve failed” is a diagnosis that requires further evidence. A useful note preserves the observation even if the initial diagnosis later changes.
Qualified service personnel should use the matching manufacturer procedure for internal checks, after isolation and pressure relief. Do not apply Pro-Flo SHIFT instructions to Pro-Flo or Turbo-Flo merely because the pump body is similar.
Translate the finding into a component scope
Once inspection identifies a component, distinguish the complete assembly from its seals, sleeve or spool. A seal-only purchase does not address an out-of-limit mating surface, and an assembly purchase may duplicate separately ordered seals.
The final maintenance record should connect the symptom, inspection result and actual component replaced. That makes a recurring fault easier to compare with the first event and avoids a cycle of speculative parts replacement.
