Chemical compatibility is more than the pump body

A complete material check follows the fluid through every wetted component and the cleaning cycle.

A wetted-material selection map connecting the fluid to the body, diaphragm, valve balls and seats or seals

Follow the entire wetted path

A catalog may lead with a stainless-steel or plastic body, but the liquid also meets diaphragms, valve components and seals. Two pumps with the same body material can have different internal configurations. For a ball-valve pump, keep separate fields for the diaphragm, balls and seats; for another valve design, record the relevant components rather than filling in an inapplicable field.

Describe the liquid at operating conditions

Start with the chemical identity, concentration and temperature, then include mixtures, impurities and abrasive particles. Versamatic notes that concentration, temperature, abrasives and trace constituents can change corrosion behavior. A generic fluid name can therefore leave a material decision incomplete. Versamatic chemical guide.

Include cleaning and changeovers

List the cleaning agent, its temperature and the exposure expected during flushing or storage. The pump configuration needs a review for those conditions too. ARO presents compatibility listings as a reference and calls for suitability to be checked under the user’s operating conditions. Treat a chart as an input to the review rather than a blanket approval for the whole installation. ARO chemical compatibility guide.

Keep the result traceable

Write a short material schedule against the complete pump code. Attach the fluid description used for the review and identify any unresolved compatibility question before ordering. If the process later changes, revisit that schedule. This is more useful than assuming the old pump’s material choice remains appropriate for a new concentration, cleaning fluid or operating temperature.
