Three labels, three different questions
PTFE, EPDM and TPE do not describe equivalent finished assemblies. PTFE identifies a fluoropolymer; EPDM identifies a rubber; TPE is a broader thermoplastic-elastomer family. Santoprene is a trade name encountered in this field, not a synonym for every TPE compound. A purchasing specification should identify both the material designation and the diaphragm construction.
Why the backing layer matters
Wilden lists PTFE diaphragms in different stroke configurations and offers several backing materials. Consequently, a request for a “PTFE diaphragm” can leave the support layer and operating geometry unresolved. The same wetted-face material does not establish that two assemblies have the same stroke or fit.
The practical comparison is face material, backing component where applicable, attachment design and the manufacturer’s assembly reference. This is especially important when a parts list distinguishes a diaphragm face from a complete diaphragm assembly.

Read material guidance at the right level
Wilden describes EPDM as an option for certain dilute acid and caustic duties. Its TPE range includes several distinct materials and diaphragm designs. Those are screening descriptions, not approval for an unspecified mixture or a different manufacturer’s compound.
Keep chemical exposure and mechanical construction as two separate review columns. The former addresses the process; the latter addresses whether the proposed part belongs in the pump. A favorable answer in one column cannot compensate for an unresolved answer in the other.
A replacement decision that can be checked
Consider an illustrative request that specifies a PTFE face but omits whether the backing diaphragm is included. Before accepting the price, resolve the assembly boundary. Otherwise two quotations may cover different quantities of material even when both say PTFE.
The completed order line should state the verified assembly number, supplied components and quantity per pump. If the replacement changes the diaphragm design, obtain the applicable configuration review instead of treating the change as routine replenishment.
